Imam of local mosque killed in North Caucasian town

MAKHACHKALA, November 2 (Itar-Tass) - Imam of a local mosque was
killed Monday night in Khasavyurt, a town in the North Caucasian region of
Dagestan, officials at the regional Interior Ministry said.
At around 22:30, unknown gunmen opened fire at Basir Salamgireyev,
wounding him in the head. He died while being taken to hospital.
Operatives and investigators are clearing out the circumstances of the
assassination.
At the same time, Interior officials say a militant having a suicide
bomber's belt was destroyed overnight to Tuesday in Kaspiysk, also in
Dagestan.
In addition to the belt, the man had a handgun with munitions.
"Under the circumstances that are not year fully clear yet, the gunman
opened fire at a street patrol policeman and wounded him," a source said.
"He was then blocked and killed and the demolition experts from the FSB
security service defused the belt."

.Senior NATO commander to meet with chief of Russia's military
district.

St PETERSBURG, November 2 (Itar-Tass) - Commander of Russia's Western
Military District, Colonel General Arkady Bakhin, and other senior
district officials are expected to receive on Tuesday the Supreme Allied
Commander of NATO's forces in Europe, U.S. Admiral John Stavridis.
The meeting will take place in St Petersburg Officers Club and will be
held behind closed doors, spokespeople for the military district said.
While in St Petersburg, the U.S. delegation will visit the Admiral N.
Kuznetsov Naval Academy, which combines the functions of a naval
university and the a defense research center.
Monday, Adm. Stavridis was received in Moscow by the Russian Defense
Minister, Anatoly Serdyukov.
Their talks were followed by Stavridis's meeting with General Nikolai
Makarov, the Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The sides discussed a broad spectrum of issues of Russia-NATO
interaction, including the ones related to the current situation in
Afghanistan and the buildup of the European antiballistic missiles system.
Gen Makarov told reporters after the meeting Russia and NATO have a
number of differences but the sides will seek to attain a community of
opinion.
"On the whole the conversation was marked by an atmosphere of
friendliness and we had concord on many more items of the agenda, and yet we still have certain differences," he said.
"I think the problems that still remain outstanding will be
scrutinized thoroughly," Gen Makarov said.
On the same day, Adm. Stavridis had a meeting with Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov. The two men expressed the hope for a success of the Russia-NATO summit, due November 19-20 in Lisbon.
"We're glad to have an opportunity to exchange opinions on relations between Russia and NATO," Lavrov said at the meeting. "There are many issued related to our partnership and today's talk will have a good effect on the general dialogue between Moscow and Brussels."
