TASHKENT, November 1 (Itar-Tass) -- Tashkent has denied as "not
conforming to the reality" the recent media reports delivered with
reference to Dushanbe officials that Tashkent has held up freight
rail cars bound for Tajikistan on the Uzbek territory. " The claims made
by the Tajik authorities do not conform to the reality and are not based
on real facts,", the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said in a statement on
Monday.
The Uzbek Customs Service said that over the past nine months
railway freight turnover in the direction of Tajikistan passing through
the Uzbek territory made up 57192 rail cars, which was 1,780 cars up and
the respective overall freight load bigger than in the same period last
year.
The Uzbek Foreign Ministry also drew attention to growing foreign
trade turnover in Tajikistan, which rose by 3.6 percent over the past nine
months, given that all freight imports and exports were made via the main
rail arteries connected with Uzbekistan.
"Groundless accusations not confirmed by real facts made by the
Tajik officials against Uzbekistan do not contribute to the
development of good neighborly and mutually advantageous contacts
between the two countries and undermine the existing level of
confidence and mutual understanding in the interstate relations," the
Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier, Tajik officials had informed the Tajik Foreign Ministry
that Tashkent unilaterally closed its border check point on the border
with Tajikistan, Itar-Tass was told at the Tajik Foreign Ministry on
Monday.
The press center of the border guard department of the Tajik
State Committee for National Security said that "the Tajik command
intends to meet the Uzbek side in the near future to clarify the
reasons of the unmotivated decision made by Tashkent."
