NAGO, October 31 (Itar-Tass) - Russia intends to use its presidency in
the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation organisation (APEC) in 2012 for
resolving efficiently tasks on creating information society, Itar-Tass
learnt on Sunday from director of the international cooperation department
of the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media Andrei Mukhanov.
He headed the Russian delegation at a meeting of communications
ministers of APEC countries, held in the Japanese city of Nago.
"It's very important now to improve communication infrastructure, to
overcome more efficiently digital disparity of regions and to turn to the
most sophisticated standards and technologies," Mukhanov explained.
According to the department head, the presidency in the APEC should be
"efficiently used by Russia to expand international cooperation in the
interests of introducing modern technologies in state administration,
medicine, education, prevention of emergencies as well as for developing
legislation in the sphere of information and communication technologies".
Besides, Russia plans to introduce over the entire territory a full
range of universal communication services to help every man to receive an
access to necessary information at any point of the country. According to
Mukhanov, this "is one of the main tasks on the way of creating an
information society".
The APEC consists of 21 economies of the Asia-Pacific region,
including Russia, China, the US, South Korea and Japan. Russia has been
participating in the forum since 1997 and will host the APEC summit for
the first time in Vladivostok on Russky Island in 2012.
