United Russia starts preparations for regional elections due Mar

MOSCOW, October 30 (Itar-Tass) -- By the end of the year the United
Russia party will form lists of candidates for regional and local
elections, to be held in March next year, the secretary of the United
Russia General Council's presidium, Sergei Neverov, told the media on
Friday.
On November 3 the General Council's Presidium will approve of the
make-up of the party's election team, which will be meeting weekly.
Earlier, the United Russia party already identified the authorized
representatives, who will oversee elections in each individual region.
Neverov said that preliminary intra-party vote on the nomination of
candidates would be completed in the near future. This time, he said, on
the lists there will be more than 50 deputies of the State Duma and 20-23
Federation Council members, which is approximately two times more than in
the October regional elections. Neverov recalled that as of January 1 the
members of the Federation Council would be appointed from a list of
regional legislators.
Neverov said that at this point he was unable to name the regions,
where the lists would be led by governors.
Speaking about the strategy of the party in the elections, he said
that it would remain the same. "The winners' strategy is not to be
changed," he said.
Simultaneously with the formation of the election team the United
Russia party will create a working group to monitor the prices and tariffs
in the public utilities sector. Also, Neverov said, the party will
continue to implement its successful projects, such as Roads of Russia,
the construction of fitness centers, etc.
Among the problem regions for his party Neverov mentioned the
Kaliningrad, Tambov, and Kirov regions, where regional legislatures will
be elected. However, he added that "no election is simple" and that "a
great deal of work should be done everywhere."
In addition to the regional elections there will be some local ones, which are to fill 85 thousand vacancies of deputies and 5,000 positions of heads of local self-government. United Russia will do its utmost to achieve a decent result," Neverov concluded.
