Rubber plantation worker wounded in Yala bombing
YALA, Oct 28 – A woman rubber worker was severely wounded Thursday by an explosion in insurgency-impacted Yala’s Raman district, according to Pol Lt-Col Songwut Si-aram, chief of Jakwa police station.
Seri Soomboon, 45, was wounded in her right leg when a bomb exploded in the rubber plantation where she was a worker.
The victim was transferred to Yala Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, responding police inspected the crime scene carefully as the use of decoys to lure investigators are frequently used by the resumed insurgents, who are rarely seen, but lure the authorities into ambushes where further casualties are often the result.
Following the initial investigation, local officers said they believed that the homemade bomb was planted beneath a rubber tree.
Previously, a number of bombings took place in Talo Halo subdistrict and wounded a number of villagers. The authorities believe that the incident was planned and carried out by a group of suspected insurgents, aimed at harming and harassing local residents until they move out from the areas.
A series of bombings occurred early Monday in Thailand's three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, wounding five rubber tappers.
The violence has intensified in the southern border region since early 2004, claiming more than 4,300 lives. Most of the victims are villagers, security personnel and teachers. (MCOT online news)
