UN needs to deepen relations with regional CSTO, SCO orgs-Lavrov.
MOSCOW, October 27 (Itar-Tass) - Effectiveness of the United Nations
Organisation largely depends on the strengthening of its cooperation with
regional organisations, including the deepening of relations with the
Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation (SCO), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is certain.
According to him, the UN is actively expanding its range of regional
partners, "involving them in the overall work for the strengthening of
stability and cooperation in various parts of the world." "The deepening
of UN cooperation with the CSTO and SCO is also promising," the Russian
foreign minister said in an interview published by the Rossiiskaya Gazeta
daily on Wednesday. In his opinion, the CSTO and SCO are making "a real
contribution to the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and
organised crime." Declarations on cooperation between these organisations
have been signed this year, Lavrov recalled.
Referring to the 65th anniversary of the United Nations the RF foreign
minister noted that "it is another reason to combine efforts to improve
the effectiveness of the World organisation." "Like any international
institution, the UN requires regular improvement. However, the reform
process should lead to the strengthening of unity for raising efficiency
of the UN, rather than exacerbating differences. This is true in full
measure concerning such an important issue as the expansion of the
Security Council," the RF foreign minister said.
According to Lavrov, the negotiating process on the reform of the UN
Security Council "is gradually moving forward." "It happens from time to
time that representatives of some countries begin to speed up
negotiations, throw in draft resolutions of the UN General Assembly the
provisions of which do not take into account the views of all parties
concerned. Such approaches are hardly productive. The absolute majority of
UN member states are aimed at finding a universal compromise, at the
maximal consideration of interests of all states and regional groups," he
said adding that "Russia has an active and constructive attitude in this
matter, it is ready to support a solution that would meet with broad
consensus of UN members."
