PM inspects flood situation in Nonthaburi
BANGKOK, Oct 25 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday inspected the unfolding flood situation in Nonthaburi province, adjacent and upstream of the Thai capital and is scheduled to chair a meeting of the newly-formed committee to help flood victims as the flood situation remains critical in some areas.
The premier, accompanied by Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Ongart Klampaiboon, inspected flood situation at Tha It Mosque in Nonthaburi's Pak Kret area Monday morning and were boarding a boat on the Chao Phraya River to observe the current living condition of riverside residents.
While flood waters have receded in some northeastern provinces, the central provinces of Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani are on alert for possible extensive flooding as the northern run-off is coming through the Chao Phraya River measured at Pakklongtalad in Bangkok at 1.97 metres earlier today, minimally lower than yesterday.
The water level in the Chao Phraya River, running through Thailand's central provinces including the capital of Bangkok, reached its highest level so far this year on Sunday as about 27 communities outside the flood prevention dikes have been under water.
The Meteorological Department announced on Monday that an intense high pressure system from China has extended its ridge cover from lower China and is expected to cover upper Thailand by today, resulting in thundershowers and cooler weather, 2-4 degrees Celsius drops and windy in the Northeast and the other regions. More rain is likely in the South from Tuesday.
In the afternoon, the prime minister is scheduled to chair a meeting of the committee to help flood victims at Government House. The meeting will follow up the ongoing relief operations for flood victims and will speed up distributing aid to affected people.
The measures to respond the flooding in central provinces due to high tides and the flow of floodwaters from upper areas in the next few days will also be raised.
The prime minister on Sunday appointed PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey as chairman of the committee to help flood victims. The committee will work with agencies concerned in rehabilitation work to restore infrastructure and to assess implementation of assistance measures.
Former Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin was also appointed as chair to the flood coordination centre to integrate overlapping agency duties to work in harmony and to receive complaints from flood victims. (MCOT online news)
