Aussie gymnasts miss world medals
Australian gymnasts Lauren Mitchell and Georgia Bonora have finished in sixth and
14th place respectively in the women's all-around final at the gymnastics world
championships in Rotterdam on Saturday.
Competing amongst the top 24 gymnasts in the world, both Australians improved on
their qualification performances, Mitchell advancing from seventh and Bonora from
17th.
Dual world championship silver medallist Mitchell, who was 0.833 off an all-around
medal with a score of 58.133, said she was satisfied with her performance.
"I guess tonight went pretty well," Mitchell said. "It was a good, normal competition.
"Obviously we had the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, but due to my injuries I haven't
competed all year, so it was quite a different type of preparation as I had to rely
on my training more.
"I feel that I am at a level where I can compete with the worlds best gymnasts."
With a total of 55.698, Bonora, the reigning Australian all-around champion, said
she was happy that she rectified her mistakes made in the team competition, where
Australia placed a gallant sixth against the powerhouses of world gymnastics.
"I felt pretty good tonight," Bonora said. "My goal was to have four out of four and
improve on the mistakes I made in the team competition.
"I think I achieved that so I am pretty happy."
Sixteen-year-old Russian Aliya Mustafina presented a brilliant performance in the
final to win the prestigious world all-around crown and deliver Russia its second
gold medal in Rotterdam, two days after leading the team to its first world title.
Mustafina's all-around total of 61.032 was even higher than from the team final and
qualification, and is the second-best score posted by a female gymnast under the new
Code of Points.
China's Jiang Yuyuan (59.998) hit four clean routines to take silver, providing
China with their best-ever all-around finish following three previous bronzes.
Despite nursing a leg injury, 2009 world silver medallist Rebecca Bross (58.966)
from the United States placed third.
In the mens all-around final, Japan's Kohei Uchimura put in another outstanding
performance to snare his second world all-around title ahead of German Philipp Boy
and American Jonathan Horton.
Australia's dual world championships medallist Prashanth Sellathurai was due to
contest the pommel horse final on Saturday night.
