Number of Russian Internet users grows 20 percent over year.

MOSCOW, October 23 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's Internet audience increased
by 20 percent from the summer of 2009 to last summer, a leading specialist
of the Public Opinion fund, manager of the Internet World project, Pavel
Lebedev, said at a meeting on the sidelines of Russian Internet Week,
which opened at Moscow's Expocenter days ago.
"These days 44 million Russian users visit the world web each month,
and 30 million of them are active users," said the expert, adding that 10
percent of them "virtually live in the Internet."
"They use search capabilities, they have fun and they make purchases
on the Internet," said Lebedev. According to research conducted by the
Fund, most of them are people aged 18 to 30 years, mostly men,
college-educated, and resident mostly in large cities.
Despite the high average statistics, in the regions, according to the
expert, the picture is not so bright.
"According to September data presence in the Internet exceeds 50
percent only in eight territories," Lebedev said. Apart from Moscow and
St. Petersburg this list includes Murmansk, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous
Area and the Far East. "This is a result of the high density of urban
population in these regions," he explained. Nevertheless, the expert is
sure that the Internet audience in the regions will continue to grow at a
rapid pace in the coming years, while the growth in the number of users in
Moscow and St. Petersburg has been slower from year to year due to the
saturation of this market.
International experts noted Runet's good performance. Russia has
demonstrated impressive growth, over just one year it has risen from 8th
place to 5th, said the vice-president of international research company
ComScore Mike Read. According to the specialist, the Russian Internet
audience is now only 2.3 percent of the world one, but the percentage is
rapidly increasing. In terms of Internet growth Russia is now in first
place in the world, he stressed. Russians are most active in social
networking, online commerce and blogs.
