Fashion extravaganza at Thailand Fashion Expo

A fashion phenomenon showcasing outstanding works of renowned Thai designers as well as fabulous fashion events and activities now being held in the Thai capital is aiming at making a fashion statement in the world of
'Voguespeak'.

Thailand Fashion Expo 2010 is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the Thai private sector from October 20-26 at Bangkok's leading department stores. Fashions galore beckon the capital's fashion aficionados.

Organised by Department of Export Promotion (DEP), the exposition under the theme of "Gateway to World Fashion In Asia" is a DEP collaboration with CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, and Siam Center, along with the Thai Chamber
of Commerce, and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The event aims at promoting Bangkok as Asia's fashion hub and demonstrating the potential of the Thai fashion industry, while it is to promote Thailand’s design business in the international arena, revive Thai fashion industry previously hit by global economic crisis and to restore the confidence of fashion entrepreneurs.

"Fashion design is a vital step to add value for fundamental industrial products. We want to see Thai designers create their brands, add value to their merchandise so as to compete in the world market," said Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai.

As the markets of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will become a Single Market in 2015, Ms Pornthiva said the expo is a good opportunity for Thai fashions to compete in ASEAN and six other nations of the ASEAN+6 which includes China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The week-long event features fashion-related activities including fashion catwalks, trade negotiations, seminars and a fashion fair of over 300 booths in the Ratchaprasong intersection area.

Hundreds of suppliers and buyers from leading malls worldwide along with importers of the ASEAN+6, Middle Eastern, European, and African countries and the United States were invited to join this business matching opportunity.

"Immediate sales order of about Bt2 billion (US$66 million) are expected to be placed during the trade negotiations, which will help push up the total orders this year to around US$14.3 billion, or counting as at least 20 per cent of Thai fashion exports," said the commerce minister.

According to DEP, the total value of Thailand's fashion exports, including textiles and clothing, shoes and leather goods, and jewellery, accounts to around Bt500 billion (US$16 billion) annually.

World-renowned designer joining the expo is Thailand's Koi-Nantirat Suwannagate whose collections have impressed United States' first lady Michelle Obama, Hollywood stars, and other worldwide fashion leaders.

New York's celebrated Koi viewed that to be successful in this business, a fashion designer must be precise in what he or she does and be on the top, and finding one's identity to represent the brand is a must.

"There is no fixed formula for becoming an international designer. The important thing is to search for what's in yourself, which will differentiate your style from those of others, and which will help others to remember your identity," said Koi.

Many famous designers start from being an assistant, she added, while a showroom for fashion collections and good public relations help count for success.

In addition, one of the exposition's highlights is a fashion show of the legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Her Gold Label 'London-Bangkok' collection will present clothing design made with Thai silk bestowed upon by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit at a gala dinner on Monday at Bangkok's Royal Navy Auditorium to be presided over by HM Queen.

Meanwhile, the expo features a reality show of fashion design contest 'The Designer' aired on Modernine TV (MCOT television channel 9) every Sunday night and will run until November 14, in which 12 finalists have been competing in an eight-episode programme.

"Not only can foreign enterpreneurs learn more of Thai brands, but also Thais themselves. This is a good opportunity that in the long run Thai people will accept and support more local products," is the opinion of Naowarat Songsawadchai, president of the Thai Leathergoods Association.
