BoT to liaise with banks for transfer fee waiver in flood-hit areas

BANGKOK, Oct 23 – Bank of Thailand (BoT) Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul on Friday revealed the central bank is ready to liaise with all commercial banks for facilitation of the money transfer without collecting a fee in flood-affected areas as part of the assistance to flood victims.

Responding to Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanich’s request for commercial banks to help flood victims by facilitating money transfers without fees in flooding-ravaged areas in 21 provinces, he said he saw no problem for the banks to do that because it is just a temporary relief measure.

On other rescue measures to ease hardship of the flood victims, he said he believed that commercial banks are in a position to take care of their customers standing on their own, regardless of more lending and debt restructuring.

Mr Prasarn said profits earned in the banking system in the third quarter this year are very high because the Thai economy enjoyed continued recovery.

Domestic consumption and exports had expanded satisfactorily, giving banks a greater opportunity to do business and expand lending.

So, he said he was confident that banks in the system overall would enjoy a loan growth of 10 per cent as targeted for this year.

As for calls that the central bank narrow the spread between deposit and lending rates and improving the fee structure, Mr Prasarn conceded it would take some time as the bank was studying additional information before acting on the matter. (MCOT online news)
