Nakhon Ratchasima announces all districts as disaster areas

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Oct 22 -- The northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has announced that all its 32 districts as disaster areas while six districts were in critical condition including Non Sung, Phimai, Chum Phuang, Chaloem Phra Kiat, Chok Chai and Chakkarat.

Nakhon Ratchasima Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital was under water for the sixth day, forced to stop accepting new patients indefinitely.

Nakhon Ratchasima Flood Disaster Relief Centre reported that the province had announced all 32 districts covering 203 sub-districts and 1,957 villages are flood disaster areas, affecting 300,000 local residents while seven people died by drowning or electrocution.

The flood also damanged 450,000 rai (180,000 acres) of agriculture area, Bt40 million worth infrastructure and six districts were under critical condition including Non Sung, Phimai, Chum Phuang, Chaloem Phra Kiat, Chok Chai and Chakkarat.

Nakhon Ratchasima Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital director Dr Prapas Ukaranant received relief packages from the Second Army Area Headquarters and told reporters that the hospital was situated in a low-lying area and has under flood water for six days.

He said the flood this year was considered the most severe in 50 years.

The hospital director said normally could accept 400 patients daily but after the flood the hospital had to stop receiving new patients indefinitely but continued to treat inpatients and critical patients.

Now there were only 185 patients and 200 medical staff are working at the hospital which has been cut off from the outside world for six consecutive days.

In related development, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva inspected and assessed the flood situation in Tha Ruea district of Ayutthaya. He boarded a boat to visit flood victims and distribute flood relief kits.

Mr Abhisit told the local residents that were affected by the flood that they would never be neglected by the government. He affirmed that all avenues would be used to provide help to them.

He said the government would try to relax the regulations on assistance to make them more flexible and easy for the flood victims to access help.

The premier earlier chaired a ceremony for the embarkment of the National Police Bureau's flood relief caravan to flood hit provinces. (MCOT online news)
