Thailand’s fiscal position remains strong, says FPO chief
BANGKOK, Oct 22 – Despite varied challenges, Thailand's fiscal position remained strong in Fiscal 2010, boosted by the higher-than-targeted revenue collection, according to Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) Director-General Naris Chaiyasoot.
As of the end of September [the end of the fiscal year which began Oct 1, 2009), he said the government had funds of Bt429.32 billion since it collected higher-than-targeted revenue in Fiscal 2010.
The improved collections resulted in the country’s fiscal position remaining strong, which could boost the government’s flexibility in fiscal policy making in response to the expected economic situation in the future.
Given the cash flow-based fiscal position in Fiscal 2010, the government earned Bt1.68 trillion in revenue for the fiscal coffer, which is 19.3 per cent higher than the previous year.
Budget disbursements totaled Bt1.78 trillion, resulting in a government budget deficit of Bt100.82 billion. Combined with an off-budget surplus of Bt3.73 billion, this caused a cash deficit of Bt97.09 billion.
He said the government borrowed Bt232.58 billion to compensate the deficit, which is Bt117.43 billion lower than targeted at Bt350 billion.
It resulted in a cash surplus of Bt135.49 billion, which brought up the fiscal coffer to Bt429.32 billion as at the end of September. (MCOT online news)
