MOSCOW, October 19 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's Rospotrebnadzor consumer
rights watchdog will offer monetary and other kinds of support to CIS and
Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries in fight against
poliomyelitis to support the status of the European region as free of that
disease, Rospotrebnadzor reported on Tuesday.
"The decision came as response to the threat of the spread of
poliomyelitis in the region caused by a recent outbreak of the disease in
Tajikistan, and a need to create a single system to prevent the spread of
epidemics in CIS and SCO countries," its report said.
The aid will include a free supply of Russian made vaccine, equipment
and test systems for laboratories of the partner countries, as well as the
education of specialists on the basis of Rospotrebnadzor's scientific
establishments.
The agency noted that since 2006 it has been constantly increasing the
amount of aid to CIS and SCO countries in fight against infectious
diseases. Nine countries of the region have received 36 sets of equipment
for labs and assistance in fight against tropic diseases. Over 100
specialists have been trained. The total amount of money allocated by the
Russian government for fight against infectious diseases in CIS states has
already exceeded 400 million roubles.
On Monday, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed an instruction to
allocate in 2010-2013 up to five million dollars from the federal budget
as a target contribution to the World Health Organization for measures
taken within the framework of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
