CAIRO, October 19 (Itar-Tass) - An international conference on
nonproliferation and nuclear security opens in Cairo Tuesday.
The three-day meeting, which will bring together experts and
researchers from 50 countries and organizations, including those from
Europe and the USA, has been organized by the Egyptian Council for Foreign
Affairs in cooperation with the Jordan-based Arab Institute for Research
in the Field of Security, as well as the Pugwash movement of scientists
for disarmament.
The list of main topics of the conference features the combating with
nuclear terrorism, the ensuring of safe storage of fissionable materials
and the guarantees of their use for peaceful purposes only.
In addition to this, the participants plan to raise the issue of
turning the Middle East into a zone free of nuclear armaments, and to
discuss mechanisms for implementing the decisions passed in September in
New York at the first meeting of the group of the "non-nuclear club."
Egypt is a signatory to the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear
Weapons and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Currently, it is actively
developing the peaceful nuclear power sector.
Egyptian government plans to build several nuclear power plants in the
coming years, stressing the full transparency of its nuclear program and
willingness to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
