World Congress of News Agencies to discuss agencies` new tasks.
BUENOS AIRES, October 19 (Itar-Tass) - Challenges and opportunities
that news agencies come across in the 21st century are the focal point of
the third World Congress of News Agencies, which begins here Tuesday.
The organizers of the forum say it will bring together 166 CEOs and
representatives of 76 new agencies from across the world.
The plans suggest that the Congress will be opened by Argentine
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
After the gala opening, the participants are expected to move to the
town of San Carlos de Bariloche in the Rio Negro province where the main
sessions and discussions will be held.
The participating captains of the international news business will pay
the bulk of attention to the utilization of new technologies and the
advent of novel information products and services.
Emphasis will also be made on the advanced areas of news agencies'
activity in what concerns their efforts to affirm their leading role among
the mass media.
The chairman of the organizing committee, Sergio Fernandez Novoa, who
is also a vice president of Argentina's state news agency Telam, said in a
recent interview that the agencies still produce two-thirds of the entire
volume of news reports on the planet.
This predestines the main task for them, which is to make the
information products more interesting and to get to new markets of
information, Novoa said.
He pinpointed one more novel aspect in the agencies' operations,
saying that previously the stories dispatched by the agencies would be
meant mostly for other reporters, while now news services have an
opportunity to reach out directly to the readers, for instance, through
Internet portals.
An international photo competition in four nominations will be held as
part of the Congress. The photos submitted four it depict the financial
crisis, holidays, disasters, and sports events.
Winners of the competition will be named at the end of the Congress.
The World Congress of News Agencies was set up in 2004 at Itar-Tass
initiative during the first global meeting of agencies CEOs in Moscow.
The second congress was held in 2007 in the Spanish city of Estepona.
Itar-Tass represents Russia at the Congress.
