Iran’s envoy to UN: Iran’s role crucial in preserving regional stability

New York, Oct 19, IRNA – Iran’s Envoy and Permanent Representative to UN referring to President Ahmadinejad’s recent Lebanon visit, said at the Security Council session that it is necessary to heed Tehran's important and strong status in preservation of regional peace and stability.

Mohammad Khazaie made the above statement at the regular Monday session of the UN Security Council which was allocated to Palestine and the Middle East issue. Khaza’ie also elaborated on Iran’s stand on the issue.

Khazaie at the New York Headquarters of the UN began his remarks with an evaluation of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent visit of Lebanon.

Focusing on the issue, Khazaie said" “ The president’s visit of Lebanon and the rarely matched welcome of the Lebanese nation and government for him were reflective of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s precise and comprehensive role in the region.”

Khaza’ie added, “That visit and such interactions can lead to the strengthening of the regional peace and stability and peace and stability in Lebanon.”

Khazaie reiterated, “The government, political parties and people’s enthusiastic welcome for our country’s president and the existing national consensus in that country regarding relations with Iran showed that those who consider that visit and the constructive and unifying role of Iran in Lebanon in contrast with their particular political intentions in Lebanon cannot opine about the matter based on their biased mentalities.”

He emphasized, “It is necessary that the international organs, particularly the UN Security Council would pay due attention to this significant and powerful role of Iran in the region and that they should take proper advantage of it in preservation of the regional peace and stability.”

Khaza’ie added, “During the past six decades the Zionist regime has always been confronting not only its entire neighbors, but also many other countries of the Islamic world.”

He meanwhile drew the attention of the UNSC members to the miserable existing conditions of the Palestinians, particularly the Gaza residents, reiterating, “Various moves against the Gaza residents and the Palestinian people in other parts of the occupied territories have led to the occurrence of a human catastrophe and if urgent moves would not be made aimed at stopping such inhumane moves and for the establishment of justice, peace and stability, the dimensions of the catastrophe would expand beyond the borders of the Middle East.”

Khazaie referred to the ratification at the nuclear NPT Revision Conference in the spring on 2010 in New York, in which the threats posed by the nuclear weapons of the Zionist regime are mentioned and the need for declaring the Middle East as a region free from weapons of mass destruction is stressed.

He added, “It is high time for the international community to end the possession of atomic weapons by a regime that has the record of state terrorism and has posed a serious threat against the regional and world peace and stability.”

Khazaie meanwhile reminded the Security Council of its responsibility to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories, as well the Sheba Farms in Lebanon and Syria’s Golan Heights, all by the racist Zionist regime./end
