RI TO ASK PAKISTAN FOR DISCOUNT IN CPO IMPORT DUTIES
Jakarta, Aug 2 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will ask Pakistan to provide an import duty discount for its crude palm oil (CPO) exports so that Indonesian CPO can compete with Malaysian CPO, an econmic affairs official said.
"Pakistan subjects CPO imports to duties but Malaysian CPO enjoys a 10-percent discount on the duty while the facility is not given to Indonensian CPO," Bayu Krisnamurthi, deputy for agricultural affairs to the coordinating minister for economic affairs, said here on Friday.
He said, as a result of the different treatment, the volume of Indonesia's CPO exports to Pakistan in the last six months had dropped by 350,000 tons causing Indonesia a loss of Rp800 billion.
Bayu said as a result of the different treatment, Indonesia's CPO exports to PAksitan were US$17 more expensive per ton than Malaysia's.
He said Pakistan wan an important entry point for Indonesia's CPO to a number of countries in Central Asia such as Afghanistan, Kirghystan, Kazakhstan and others.
"Their demand for CPO is high and we are trying to settle the problem. We hope we can send a trade mission to Pakistan this month to discuss the problem and take strategic steps," he added.
He said Indonesia's and Malaysia's CPO market shares were relatively balanced at about 50 percent in past few months but at present Malaysia's market share had almost reached 65 percent.
"Indonesia's CPO exports thereby dropped by 35 percent in terms of volume," he said.
Bayu said the volume of Indonesia's CPO exports reached 12 million tons per annum while its total production in 2008 was estimated at 18 million tons.
The bulk of Indonesia's CPO exports was so far going to China, India and the United States.
