THIRD ICIS ENDS WITH ADOPTION OF "JAKARTA MESSAGE" FOR WORLD PEACE

Jakarta, Aug 2 (ANTARA) - The three-day International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) ended here Friday with the adoption of a "Jakarta Message."Indonesiann Foreign Minister Hasan Wirayudha was given the honor to speak at the closing ceremony. On the occasion, he referred to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's remarks at the conference's opening on Wednesday (July 30).

"We welcome the ICIS resolution which calls for a life," Wirayuda said.

He also mentioned that in the future, the meeting should be held once every four years on a global scale and once every two years on a regional scale. The regional scale conferences could be held for five different regions which would be formed later.

About the ICIS's resolution, Wirayudha said he believed it could be implemented in concrete terms in several stages.

"We hope after they have returned in their respective countries, the conference delegates can encourage their own societies about efforts to settle conflicts and problems as well as help solve international issues," he said.

"The Jakarta Message adopted today (August 1) reflects those measures the government of Indonesia is taking and supporting. It incorporates the fundamental principle of Islam as Rahmatan lil Alamin (blessings for the universe) which is very much attuned to the needs of society in today's world," he said.

The minister further said the conference translated words into actions with the establishment of the 'Ulamas Sans Frontiers' who would bring the message of peace to the Muslim world.

Ulamas Sans Frontiers are those who should transcend borders in building peace and prevent conflicts among other issues through facilitation and mediation.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla who was earlier scheduled to close the event was unable to come and he was replaced by Hassan Wirayudha.
