WA celebrates saint-to-be
The Catholic faithful have gathered at St Mary's Cathedral in Perth to honour Mary
MacKillop before her canonisation.
Led by Bishop Donald Sproxton, an estimated 300 people attended a church filled to
overflowing for the service.
Among the attendees were Premier Colin Barnett and Opposition Leader Eric Ripper.
Mr Barnett said it was significant for all Australians, not just Catholics, that
Australia had its first saint.
"All Australians should celebrate that and celebrate her life and all that she did
for the poor, the needy and people at risk during her time in the leadership of the
Josephites," he said.
Mr Ripper described Mary as a "true pioneer" of social justice.
"Despite living through the immense social rifts and problems of the 19th century,
(she) managed to bring hope and education to many people in need," he said.
"Her disposition, values and strong work ethic still serve as a contemporary role
model."
The process to canonise Mary, who died in 1909, began in 1926 before being suspended
in 1931 and restarted in 1951.
About 50,000 people are expected to pack into St Peter's Square in Rome for the
ceremony, including 6000 Australians.
An Australian parliamentary delegation, including Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd,
Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop, will accompany Cardinal George Pell at the
ceremony, presided over by Pope Benedict XVI.
