Descarado wins Caulfield Cup
Gai Waterhouse won her first Caulfield Cup when Descarado ploughed through the heavy
conditions to score a gritty win in the $2.5 million feature on Saturday.
Perfectly ridden by Chris Munce, the High Chaparral four-year-old bounced back from
his 14th to Zipping in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 3 to
land the 2400m feature.
It was the gelding's fourth win from 14 starts which have also yielded five places
for prizemoney of almost $2 million.
Descarado, who was second to Shoot Out in the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at
Randwick in the autumn, was bought by Waterhouse's husband Robbie in New Zealand
where he had won two races from five starts.
Munce got Descarado over nicely from his wide alley in the early stages and he
settled fourth in the 18-horse field.
He went to the front in the straight and had too much in hand for New Zealander
Harris Tweed and Monaco Consul.
"I'm just so rapt," an emotional Munce said.
Waterhouse praised Munce's ride in the trying conditions.
"I just said get going early, you don't want to be trapped wide," she said.
"It's a dream come true, isn't it?"
