Pedestrian killed in highway smash
A woman has been struck and killed while trying to cross a busy highway in
Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
The female pedestrian, believed to be in her 60s or 70s, had been trying to cross
the Burwood Highway at Burwood East when she was hit by a car driving into the city.
Police say the driver stopped to help as witnesses started performing CPR.
Paramedics arrived shortly after 5.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday but the woman was
pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman is Victoria's 247th road fatality of the year. At this point last year the
state had recorded 216 fatalities.
Police will prepare a report on the collision for the coroner.
