POLLUTION OF RIVER ORKHON TO BE REDUCED
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The cabinet meeting held Wednesday decided to restore the channels of Ar Ulaan Chuluut and Shiiter rivers which belong to a basin of the Orkhon River, and to repair the cleft dams.
Accordingly, a damage caused to the environment by the "Altan Dornod Mongol" and the "Mongol Gazar" LLCs will be estimated by professional organization, compensation and restoration money will be paid by these companies.
Pursuant to related laws, the cabinet will tackle matters concerning special licenses for exploring and exploiting mineral resources on river basins, for these actions threaten health of those living along the River Orkhon. Money will be issued from the governmental reserved fund to buy lab equipment and facilities that control over rivers' pollution and fix sources of pollution and to improve this lab.
In July this year, the General Agency for Specialized Inspection examined waters in rivers in Ovorkhangai and Arkhangai aimags, and revealed that the River Orkhon has been greatly polluted due to mineral extraction of the "Altan Dornod Mongol" and the "Mongol Gazar" LLCs. These entities, which hold special licenses of mineral resources, have been extracting gold from basins of Olzii, Shiiter, Ulaan chuluut and Olziit Teel rivers that debouch into the River Orkhon.
