No Russians among flood victims in China`s Hainan province.
GUANGZHOU, Guangdong Province, China, October 13 (Itar-Tass) -- The
Russian consulate general in south China's city of Guangzhou, Guangdong
Province, said on Wednesday it had no information about any Russians who
might be among the casualties of heavy floods at resort cities on China's
Hainan island.
"We have contacted relevant authorities in the cities of Haikou and
Sanya, traditional vacationing destinations for Russian tourists," Russia'
s Consul General Sergei Kotov told Itar-Tass. "Our consulate has received
no official reports from Russian citizens saying any of them had been
affected by the floods, neither have local public security agencies."
He also said the consulate had issued an official request to the
Chinese side. "Preliminary reply says three foreigners have been reported
among the flood's casualties, although their national identity has not
been specified. There is a chance that one or two of them might be
Russians but it is wrong to speak about any catastrophic situation with
Russian tourists on the island," he stressed.
The Russian consulate general "is keeping the issue under scrutiny and
is trying to obtain any possible information from the Chinese side," the
Russian diplomat said. "Preliminary answer is as follows: there are no
Russians among the casualties," he added.
According to official reports, heavy floods following torrential rains
in the Hainan province have forced the local authorities to evacuate more
than 440,000 people. The flood's casualties are estimated at 2.7 million
people. Up to 90 percent of the province's territory, primarily the island'
s inner areas, have been affected by the floods.
