Iran-Oman economic ties to be expanded
IRI foreign minister and Oman’s minister of commerce and industries here Monday emphasized need for expansion of bilateral business and economic ties.
Manouchehr Mottaki as the head of the Iranian delegation at the 13th Economic Commission of Iran and Oman and the Omani Minister of Commerce and Industries Maqboul bin-Ali bin-Sultan as his country’s economic delegation both emphasized the matter during the session.
According to IRNA, the Information and Media Head Office of the IRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the meeting Mottaki and bin-Sultan on Monday morning took place after two days of intensive talks between the two countries’ economists who had prepared the documents and planned for the expansion of bilateral economic ties.
Mottaki in his address at the gathering referred to the meeting between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Sultan Qaboos as the cornerstone for evermore expansion of comprehensive relations in economic and political fields.
He referred to the existence of strong friendly ties between the two countries, emphasizing that potentials for expanding them exist in various fields, particularly in tourism, mining, goods transport and joint investment fields, particularly the implementation of the reached agreements during the previous joint economic commissions.
The Iranian foreign minister also considered transiting goods from the Central Asia region to Oman and vice versa of great significance, arguing that the Iran’s geographical position and the two countries’ bilateral relations provide great incentives for taking mutual benefit of the existing privilege in this field.
Mottaki meanwhile proposed that a joint Iranian-Omani airline should be established keeping in mind the incoming and outgoing tourists of Iran, considering the move of importance in boosting bilateral relations.
The minister of commerce and mines of Oman, too, in the meeting considered the two countries’ economic ties during the past five years a positive, predicting that by the end of 2010 the volume of bilateral trade would be at a satisfactory level.
Maqbool bin-Ali bin-Sultan referred to the high volume of his country’s foodstuff imports on the one hand and the high privilege that the Islamic Republic of Iran has in competing in the field, expressing hope that the two countries small and medium size companies active in the field and in related fields such as packing, would get actively involved.
Welcoming the idea of establishing joint investment private sector companies in various economic fields in both countries, particularly in oil, gas, electricity power plants, transportations and goods transit fields in the region, as well as importing Iranian copper.
He said, “Oman Government has plans for establishing direct flights to Tehran as of winter of 2011,” stressing need for launching the pilot study of the two countries’ sea transportation cooperation.
The Omani head of the two countries’ joint economic commission meanwhile in the meeting referred to his country’s wheat imports from Iran, asking for its continuation in the framework of a regular annual basis.
