PM to raise with Gilani issue of ISI's hand in embassy attack

Ajay Kaul Colombo, Aug 2 (PTI) Armed with the "cleanest" evidence about I.S.I.'s involvement in the Kabul embassy attack, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will raise the issue as also the recent ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces when he meets his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani Saturday on the margins ofthe S.A.A.R.C. Summit here.

In his first meeting with Gilani, Singh is expected to convey New Delhi's concerns over the rising indulgence by I.S.I. in anti-India activities regarding which some other countries also have voiced their worries, high-level Indian government sources accompanying Prime Minister Singh heresaid.

India as well as Afghanistan have blamed the I.S.I. for the July 7 suicide attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul whichkilled nearly 60 people, including four Indians.

The involvement of the I.S.I. in the attack has been confirmed by the U.S. as well as British intelligenceagencies.

All intelligence agencies have intelligence inputs as well as intercepts about the I.S.I.'s involvement, the sourcessaid.

This is a "cleanest" case and "that is why we went public about it even though Pakistan was unhappy over this," they said, adding this issue will be raised during the Singh-Gilanimeeting.

The sources, however, sought to make a distinction between the "rogue" I.S.I. and the Islamabad government, saying India will have to continue its engagement withPakistan as it cannot choose its neighbours.

Earlier, the sources said, New Delhi used to say I.S.I.

is involved in terror acts in India and now even the US ismaking such observations.

"We have never blamed I.S.I. off-the-cuff. The blame has been always on the basis of intelligence," the sources said, pointing out that all major terror outfits like Lashkar-e Toiba and al-Badr have been receiving patronage from thePakistani intelligence agency.

Singh is also expected to raise with Gilani the issue of recent violations of the four-year-old ceasefire along the LoCby Pakistani forces.

While the Indian government is guarding against overplaying the subject, it is determined to prevent anyKargil-type episode.

There have been several cases of Pakistani troops opening fire recently, including one incident in which they crossed the LoC to attack an Indian post. India had voiced concernover this.

During his meeting with Gilani, Singh is expected to press the Pakistani side to ensure that the sanctity of the ceasefire on LoC is maintained and cross-border terrorism and infiltration are curbed. PTI AKK
