BAKU, October 12 (Itar-Tass) -- The international railway forum
"Strategic partnership 1520: Caucasian region" is opening in the capital
of Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
As a representative of the Russian delegation which represents the
Russian Railways company (RZD) told ITAR-TASS, "the forum will become a
regional floor of discussions for transport workers, politicians and
representatives of the business community."
"The Caucasus and Central Asia is the most important junction of
global land and sea ways," the source said stressing that "the situation
in the region is a part of the common picture reflecting the state of the
Eurasian transport space."
Therefore, as specialists believe, "projects of development of the
transport corridor "North-South" connecting Europe and the Caspian basin,
as well as the attraction of investments in the railway sector,
modernization of tariffs and raising of the quality of services are first
and foremost."
The RZD representative recalled that the railway track with a width of
1520 millimetres unites all CIS and Baltic countries, as well as Mongolia
and Finland. "The total length of railways with the 'wide' track is over
150,000 kilometres," he said. The track is 'wide' in comparison with the
so-called narrow track which is used, in particular, in North America,
Europe, China and has a width of 1435 millimetres.
