Muscovites get unique chance to learn more about Napoleon.
MOSCOW, October 12 (Itar-Tass) - A unique exhibition, "Napoleon and
the Louvre", has been on display at the State Museum of History in the
Russian capital since September 20, 2010.
Its organizers must have, indeed, had Napoleonic plans when they
developed the exposition's concept. It features both sculptural works and
painting depicting the French emperor. The most outstanding of them are a
three-meter high statue of Napoleon and a famous canvas by David
"Bonaparte crossing the St. Bernard Pass" by Jacques-Louis David. Russian
visitors will see the originals of many pictures for the first time.
Part of the exposition features Napoleon's personal belongings,
including his travel toilet bag. They arrived in Moscow together with
imperial treasures. Women, in particular, will be attracted by the
magnificent gala dress of Napoleon's first wife Josephine.
Napoleon's second wife was Marie-Louise of Austria. The French
emperor celebrated his second wedding in the Louvre. But it's not the
only trace, which the emperor left in the history of the oldest museum in
Paris. The Louvre largely owes its rich collection of paintings and
sculpture to Napoleon. For many years the museum was called "Napoleon's
Museum".
Art occupied a special place in Napoleon's empire. Its task was not
only to glorify the French arms but also to strengthen the power of the
new emperor. Bonaparte's energy, brains and administrative talent helped
him to attract the best architects, sculptors and painters to forming the
museum's collection. Numerous treasures that the French captured during
his military campaigns streamed into the Louvre. Now the museum can boast
one of the best collections in the world.
Many masterpieces from that collection are now in Moscow. Apart from
the Louvre eleven more French museums have sent over 100 various exhibits
to the Russian capital. They include paintings, sculpture, tableware,
tapestry, weaponry, etc.
The exhibition is a vital event in the calendar of the France-2010
festival in Russia. It will be open until December 10.
