Thai PM Abhisit hails Myanmar visit
BANGKOK, Oct 12 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday described his one-day visit to Myanmar on Monday as positive for overall relations which would further strengthen the two countries' bilateral ties and cooperation particularly in terms of trade and investment.
During his short stay in Nay Pyi Taw, Mr Abhisit met with his Myanmar counterpart Gen Thein Sein and discussed enhancing and consolidating the two countries' bilateral friendship, promoting bilateral cooperation for the development of both countries' border areas, tackling drug trafficking as well as boosting trade and investment, promoting the tourism sector,
building a deep-sea port in Dawei, and the issue of Myanmar workers in Thailand.
Regarding the Mae Sot-Myawaddy border closure, the Thai prime minister conceded the issue remains unresolved as Myanmar said it needed to deal with its internal problems before reopening the border checkpoint.
The Mae Sot-Myawaddy border closure since July 12 has jeopardised border trade between the two countries, as well as the building of telecommunication networks and cooperation in sending nationals to work in each country.
The Thai premier said the possible establishment of a permanent border checkpoint at Dan Singkhon in Thailand's southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan was raised at the meeting and Myanmar promised to consider the issue including the need to support the development of deep-sea port in Dawei.
Both leaders also jointly agree on the need to set up an exclusive economic zone and that a production base along the border may help ease problems such as the influx of migrant workers, Mr Abhisit said.
Regarding Myanmar's general election on Nov 7 which will be the military-ruled country’s first election in 20 years, Mr Abhisit said the Myanmar leader said his country was aware of international concerns but stood firm that it could handle its internal affairs without outside intervention.
The Thai prime minister also made a courtesy call on Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).
Mr Abhisit said there was no discussion on a future visit to Thailand by the Myanmar leader but noted that both leaders would have an opportunity to meet again during the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) summit in Hanoi later this month. (MCOT online news)
