Australia offers military expertise to Pak to contain Taliban
Melbourne, July 31 (PTI) - Australia Wednesday offered military expertise to Pakistan for controlling Talibaninsurgents operating on its border with Afghanistan.
Australian Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon said he believed Australian counter-insurgency experts could help train Pakistani forces deployed on the Pak-Afghan border, according to an A.B.C. report.
Fitzgibbon said Pakistani forces are trying hard, but arestruggling to gain control of the region.
He said any role for the Australian troops neededapproval by the Pakistan Government.
"I think any talk of any sort of intervention which sits outside Pakistani invitation is just too hypothetical and too early to even contemplate," he said, adding "We have to focus on the diplomatic efforts, we have to focus on working with Pakistan and working on helping them from within."
