Red Shirts gather at Democracy Monument to commemorate losses in political turmoil

BANGKOK, Oct 10 – Supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Sunday began their rally by assembling at Saladaeng intersection and later moved to the Democracy Monument to light 20,000 red candles as a memorial gesture for those killed during the April-May protests.

Today's Red Shirt activities were led by Sombat Boonngamanong, a leading activist of the Red Sunday group.

The demonstrators offered alms to Buddhist monks in memory of the slain army officer and to others killed in the area.

After laying flowers at Saladaeng intersection where Army specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, also known as Seh Daeng, was shot on May 13 and later died at hospital, they moved to Ratchaprasong intersection to the Victory Monument and the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamneon Avenue.

More than 700 police officers have been deployed in the Ratchaprasong and Silom areas -- sites where the UDD protested against the government earlier this year in demonstrations which ended with the main Red Shirt leaders surrendering to the authorities on May 19.

Stressing that police could control the situation, National Police Chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree said that so far the demonstrators have only displayed symbolic rally.

However, he said sixty-four men have slipped into the Thai capital, warning that they may instigate a disturbance in Bangkok.

Without providing details on the 64 young men, Gen Wichean said he had ordered Bangkok's police commander to closely monitor their movements.

He urged the public to cooperate and inform officials if they found any suspicious objects or persons during the demonstration by UDD members. (MCOT online news)
