Journalists assured of smooth internet access during Games
Beijing, July 31 (PTI) Putting to rest mediapersons' doubts that internet capacity will slow down once the Beijing Olympics starts next month, the Games organising committee Wednesday said the journalists covering the event will enjoy "sufficient and convenient Internet access." "Your reporting on the Games will not be affected," Sun Weide, a media official with the organising committee, wasquoted by state-run Xinhua news agency as saying.
Sports editor of the World Journal, the largest Chinese language newspaper in North America, Ju-Nie Shen Muller said internet facility provided at the Main Press Center (M.P.C.) and other venues was "speedy and stable" but was wary ofsmooth connection during the Games.
"My articles can be sent back to editing office very smoothly, and I can go every website I must go, to find theinformation I need in my reporting from the Internet.
"My only worry is whether the Internet operation capacity could remain stable when the number of users surges after the opening of the Games," the sports editor was quoted by Xinhuaas saying.
A Brazilian journalist, Celso Paiva, said: "Until now, I don't have any problem to access the news websites which I need, and the Internet is fast here." On an average 150 reporters from China and abroad work at the M.P.C. every day. Most of them have bought one of the three kinds of Olympic Broadband IC cards, namely thebroadband IC card, WLAN, and WLAN plus info 2008.
Renting a Broadband IC card or a WLAN from July 25 to August 25 costs USD 500 US while renting a WLAN plus info 2008 costs USD 1237. PTI KAD
