AvtoVAZ starts export of SUVs matching Euro-5 standards.

SAMARA, October 9 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's largest car manufacturer
AvtoVAZ is beginning to export its three-door SUV Lada 4x4 matching the ecological standard Euro-5, which will come into effect in Western Europe as of January 1, 2011, the AvtoVAZ press center said this week.

Alongside the SUV two other AvtoVAZ products have been certified under
the new standards - Lada Kalina and Lada Priora with 16-valve engines. The
first export versions of the Kalina and Priora will roll off the assembly
lines in January 2011. Cars for the domestic market will continue to be
powered with the Euro-3 standard engines in accordance with the applicable
Russian legislation.
Euro-5 differs from Europe's current Euro-4 standards by its more
stringent requirements: Euro-4 vehicles must comply with exhaust toxicity
standards after a run of 100,000 kilometers, while the Euro-5 standard
requires compliance with environmental parameters after 160,000 kilometers.
To adjust Lada cars to the new standards the manufacturer introduced
some engineering innovations and advanced software to the engine's control
system.

.Russian students to present moon bike at contest in US Apr 2011.

MOSCOW, October 9 (Itar-Tass) -- Students from the Moscow Aviation
Institute (MAI) will present their moon bike project at NASA's
international contest Moonbuggy Race. This annual event, which has been
held for the past 18 years, is due in Huntsville, Alabama, the US on April
12, 2011.
"We developed our own project, called the Lunokhod (Moonrover) bike,
and we shall take it to the United States for the competition," said one
of the three members of the Russian team, Marina Tereshkova.
The moon bike, designed by the Russian students, is based on the
German-Russian project for a moon tandem bike, which took first place in
this year's race. Future aircraft engineers plan to achieve still better
parameters by using advanced materials and reducing weight.
It is a great honor and a great motivation for the MAI students the
contest will take place on the day of the 50th anniversary of the first
space flight by Yuri Gagarin.
"We dedicate our participation in the contest to this memorable event
in the history of humankind," Russia's Moonbuggy team said.
The NASA Moonbuggy Race is a competition of student teams on
four-wheel tandem bicycles, designed and assembled by the students
themselves. The race is held on a rugged path one kilometer long and
resembling the moon surface. The mandatory rule is the vehicle should be
driven through pedals only and take a space of no more than 1.2 cubic
meters in the folded state.
"Of course, no moon bike will ever fly to the moon," Tereshkova
explained. "This competition is meant for letting future engineers and
students feel like real designers and accumulate experience and generate
ideas they may use some day in building vehicles for other planets'
surfaces.
Tereshkova added that developing and building a real moon rover will
be their next engineering project.

.Russian Post to double number of international mail processing
offices.

MOSCOW, October 9 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian Post intends to reduce
the processing time of international mail. As the press service of the
national postal operator said this week, this will be done through gradual
expansion of the network of international mail service offices. The number
of such outlets will be doubled to 24.
"Early 2010 saw an upsurge in the volume of international mail. The
Russian Post predicts a further 20-percent growth," the press-service
said. New mail processing facilities with a capacity of 210 thousand boxed
parcels, 450 thousand wrapped parcels and 110 thousand EMS-shipments a
month, according to the operator, will ensure "smooth handling of
international mail." The distribution of incoming and outgoing
international mail flows inside the territory of the Russian Federation,
as the Russian Post said, will rule out a situation where the bulk of mail
was concentrated in Moscow. To speed up the processing of express mail
special areas will be reserved at the airports of Sheremetyevo and Pulkovo.
"The emergence of more international postal exchange sites would more
evenly distribute the international correspondence in the territory of
Russia, which will certainly have a positive impact on the processing
speed and delivery time of international mail, and, ultimately, stimulate
the further development of distance selling in Russia," Russian Post
General Director Alexander Kiselyov said.
The locations of international postal exchange sites have been brought
closer to the major transportation hubs in Russia, first of all, the
largest airports, such as Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo in Moscow,
Pulkovo in St. Petersburg, Sochi, in the Southern Federal District and
Vladivostok in Primorsky Territory. In addition, the list of international
postal traffic facilities now includes outlets in Novosibirsk, Bryansk,
Blagoveshchensk, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Kaliningrad, Murmansk, Novosibirsk,
Petrozavodsk, Samara, Orenburg, Vladikavkaz, Kingisepp, Sortavala (the
Republic of Karelia) and Nakhodka.
