AHMAD SYAFI'I MA'ARIF RECEIVES MAGSAYSAY AWARD

Jakarta, Aug 1 (ANTARA) - Ahmad Syai'i Ma'arif, former chairman of Muhammadiyah organization and founder of Maarif Institute for Culture and Humanity was granted posthumously the 2008 Magsaysay Award from the Board of the Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Foundation (RMAF) here on Thursday.

"He was conferred with the award for his commitment and seriousness in guiding moslems to accept tolerance and pluralism as basis for justice and harmony in Indonesia as well as in the world," RMAF president Carmencita T Abella said in an electronic letter to Maarif Institute.

Maarif who is often intimately called Buya received the award for peace and international understanding. The five categories of appreciation are government service, public service, community leadership, journalism, literature and creative arts of communications, emergent leadership.

RMAF is an international institute established in 1958 to confer tokens of appreciation to individuals and institutitions in Asia irrespective of ethnicity, race, gender, nationality, and religion.
