Thai police to be deployed at sensitive areas; protesters gear up for Red Shirt rally

BANGKOK, Oct 9 -- About 3,000 police will be deployed at sensitive areas in the Thai capital Sunday as anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to rally demanding the release of imprisoned UDD leaders, according to national police chief Pol Gen Vichien Poteposri.

Pol Gen Vichien said police have estimated that 5,000 to 7,000 UDD Red Shirt supporters will participate in the rally. He said the protesters have been asked to conduct it in a symbolic manner and to stop the demonstration no later than 5pm.

Police will be posted at important and sensitive areas including BTS Skytrain stations, MRT underground stations and at the Democracy Monument, which was the scene of bloody fighting between protesters and security personnel on April 10, Gen Vichien said.

The nation's top police officer advised UDD supporters upcountry to hold rallies in their hometowns instead of travelling to Bangkok, he said.

Sellers of fertiliser, such as urea which can produce an explosive similar to TNT, gas cylinders and fire extinguishers are required to note down the names of buyers who are not their regular clients and inform the authorities immediately for fear that these materials would be used for making bombs, Gen Vichien said.

A number of UDD leaders are being detained on terrorism charges after their marathon rally ended May 19 following clashes between protesters and military in the capital. The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship has been demanding the coalition government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down unconditionally. (MCOT online news)
