Arrest warrant issued for man allegedly possessing war weapons
BANGKOK, Oct 9 -- A Thai court has issued an arrest warrant for a man who rented an apartment room in a Rama IV Road neighbourhood of Bangrak where police confiscated a cache of military weapons found in his room, acting Bangkok police chief Pol Lt-Gen Chakthip Chaijinda said.
Gen Chakthip said arrest warrant was issued for Sooksun Rungviraen on charges of illegally possessing the weapons and explosives found in his room on Rama IV Road and near the former headquarters of the opposition Puea Thai Party in Bangrak.
Police on Thursday found a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, an AK assault rifle, four RPG grenades and 750 AK47 cartridges in the rented room of a commercial building in Bangrak district. Witness said he found the weapons as the building owner had asked him to break into the room, rented by Mr Sooksun, a former employee of the opposition Puea Thai Party who disappeared from the building at the end of August.
The court, however, rejected a police request for a warrant for a man identified as Preeda Kaenpo due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
Mr Preeda, also still at large, is a close friend of Mr Sooksun, and shared the third floor room. Both work as guards at the same security firm.
Police will probe whether the seized weapons were the same as those used in shooting at the Ministry of Defense but hit the revered Emerald Buddha, housed nearby, earlier this year, said Gen Chakthip.
Newly appointed army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has said that the seized weapons are not Thai military issue and have not been used in Thailand.
In related development, national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree chaired video conference meeting to police nationwide to step up security measures and be on high alert to prevent possible future bombings.
He also instructed Metropolitan Police Bureau to prepare security measures to handle the anti-government 'Red-Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) which planned to hold some political activities on Sunday. (MCOT online news)
