Yellow Shirt lawyer petitions against arrest warrants in airport seizure
BANGKOK, Oct 8 – A lawyer representing the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the Yellow Shirt movement, opposed the police’s request to seek arrest warrants for five PAD members in the airport seizure case, saying they asked for postponement in reporting themselves to the police and charges filed against them have no basis in fact.
Nutthaporn Toprayoon, a PAD lawyer, lodged a petition to oppose a arrest warrant for five PAD members including Chaiwat Sunsuwong, secretary general of the People's Assembly of Thailand, Veera Somkwamkid, secretary-general of the People's Network Against Corruption, Somboon Thongburan, ex-senator of Yasothon, Somchai Wongwet and Tonfun Saengarthit.
The five PAD members joined the PAD protest at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in 2008 and were charged with forming an assembly of more than ten people, using force to attack, acting to cause a disturbance on property owned by others and rejecting to vacate the site.
Mr Nutthaporn said the main reason for opposing the investigators’ request for arrest warrants for the five was that they submitted letters to ask for postponement of their reporting to police but investigators did not consider their request.
The investigators ignored when the PAD lawyer met them to explain the five persons had no intention to escape but to comply with their summonses and filed charges against them without sufficient evidence.
The PAD lawyer said he would petition Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva seeking a change in the investigation team whom they accuse of failing to treat them fairly.
The "Yellow Shirts"opposed ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra staged protests in 2008 that led to a nine-day blockade and occupation of Bangkok's airports. The siege left more than 300,000
visitors stranded, denting the kingdom's tourist-friendly image.
Yellow-shirt protesters besieged the airports to oust the then government of Somchai Wongsawat whom they considered as a proxy of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. (MCOT online news)
