BANGKOK, Oct 8 -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva arrived in Bangkok early Friday morning after attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Brussels, Belgium and having a royal audience with Princess Bajrakitiyabha who is attending a meeting on Enhancing Lives of Female Inmates (ELFI) at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The prime minister attended the 8th Asia-Europe leaders meeting (ASEM 8) in Brussels and the ELFI exhibition in New York, October 3 though 8.

Mr Abhisit's flight arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport at about 6.40am. Bypassing interviews with waiting reporters, he abruptly returned home.

He was scheduled to chair a meeting at Government House at 9am as his first engagement.

National police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree was scheduled to meet the premier and expected to report on the security situation to him.

In related developments on security matters, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) detained Aram Saeng-arun, a former paramilitary ranger at Pak Thong Chai military camp in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

He was arrested at Ubon Ratchathani and was taken to Bangkok for further questioning.

Police said Mr Aram, 49, was allegedly invited by late Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as Seh Daeng, to joined the armed 'men in black' group during the Ratchaprasong protest by the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

He was accused of controlling the distribution of M79 grenades and committing many M79 attacks. Mr Aram has denied the charges saying he was in a car during the Red Shirt protest at Ratchaprasong and did not join the UDD rally at Phan Fah bridge on Ratchadamnoen Road.

Meanwhile, an RPG launcher and four rockets were found on Thursday night in a rented room near the old Puea Thai Party headquarters in the Saphan Lueng area of Rama IV Road. (MCOT online news)
