DSI: Intelligence reports indicate more bombings likely
BANGKOK, Oct 7 - Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said on Thursday that intelligence reports suggest that there are more bombing incidents in the making, similar to the recent Bang Bua Thong apartment explosion in Nonthaburi province.
Four people were killed and nine people were injured in an apparent bomb-manufacturing incident at apartment in Bang Bua Thong on Tuesday and the initial investigation found a bomb-making suspect, who rented the apartment, accidentally killed himself and others.
The DSI intelligence indicates a possibility of further such incidents. However, the severity and frequency of future disturbances depend on the work of perpetrators, circumstances and possible security lapses of the state, DSI Director-General Tharit Pengdit said.
"I cannot specify in detail as it is a sensitive issue, but they did continue to plot violence according to DSI intelligence reports,” he said.
If the police chief indicates that the bombing at the Nonthaburi was related to four previous bomb incidents, both threats and blasts, this case may be forwarded to the DSI for investigation as a special case, the DSI chief added.
Regarding legal examination on the detention of 175 people in the cases of political unrest cases, Mr Tharit said the House committee on Political Development and Public Participation resolved to have five agencies including the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection, the Ministry of Justice, the National Human Rights Commission, the DSI and the police jointly examine whether or not any of those 175 detainees in unrest cases now in 17 prisons across the country have been detained in an unfair manner.
Lawyers will be provided and the process can start on Oct 11 by five working teams and their work will be concluded and submitted to the prime minister within five days, the DSI director-general said. (MCOT online news)
