Medvedev to make first official visit to Cyprus

MOSCOW, October 7 (Itar-Tass) -- President Dmitry Medvedev arrived on
the first official visit to Cyprus on October 7.
In Nicosia, Medvedev is scheduled to have negotiations with Cypriot
President Demetris Christofias, meet other top officials and confer with
Archbishop Chrysostomos II of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, Russian
presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko told Itar-Tass.
The Russian leader is also expected to attend the opening of a Nicosia
office of a Russian commercial bank. "The entry of VTB's subsidiary into
the retail segment of the EU financial market will be an important step
toward broader cooperation between Russia and the EU," the official
elaborated.
Prikhodko noted that a Russian presidential visit would be held in the
year marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two
countries. "Russia has many common historical ties with Cyprus, and we
feel mutual sympathy that is based on a common approach to many historical
issues, including the results of the Second World War," he remarked.
The Russian presidential aide noted that the president would award his
Cypriot counterpart with the Order of Friendship "for a great personal
contribution to stronger and comprehensive development of Russian-Cypriot
relations."
"Cyprus is Russia's stable economic partner. In the first half of
2010, bilateral trade went up 250.8 percent against the same period of
2009 to exceed one billion U.S. dollar. Investment cooperation is
developing actively. Cypriot investments in Russian economy had totalled
around 52.18 billion U.S. dollars in August 2010, including 37.89 billion
U.S. dollars worth of direct investments," Prikhodko cited statistical
reports.
During the official visit to Cyprus the Russian president will be
accompanied by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Transport Minister Igor
Levitin, Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko, Federal Migration Service chief
Konstantin Romodanovsky, Federal Tourism Agency Head Anatoly Yarochkin,
and Rostechnologii chief Sergei Chemezov. A Russian business delegation
will also go to Cyprus, because a business forum will be held
simultaneously with Medvedev's visit to Nicosia.
