Commercial counselors urge government to boost competitiveness

BANGKOK, Oct 7 – Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai on Wednesday said that Thailand's 67 commercial counselors worldwide voiced concern over the strengthening of the baht and called on the government to take measures to boost the competitiveness of Thai products and services.

She said the counselors reported impacts of the baht surge and gave suggestions on ways to ease the repercussions on exports.

The counselors were worried about an appreciation of Asian currencies by around 6 per cent and the economic slowdown of the United States and the European Union.

They supported the government’s plan to take measures proposed by the Commerce Ministry to ensure the competitiveness of Thai products and services is second to none.

Mrs Porntiva said she would meet Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij to propose measures to ease impacts of the currency surge on entrepreneurs, particularly small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

“State agencies concerned with the export planning in 2011 are instructed to maintain major markets and distribute exports to new markets with growth potential. They should focus on increasing the proportion in both major and new markets to 50 to 50 and utilising liberal trade agreements,” she said. (MCOT online news)
