Office of Ata Zhurt Party attacked in Kyrgyz capital.
BISHKEK, October 6 (Itar-Tass) -- An attack on the central office of Ata Zhurt Party (Fatherland Party) was staged in the Kyrgyz capital on Wednesday.
At present some 100 people, including policemen and members of
Ata Zhurt, are staying outside its office, Itar-Tass correspondent reports
from the scene of the incident. According to their information, about an
hour ago several dozens of people in civilian clothes broke into the
office of Ata Zhurt Party and began to destroy the furniture and to
confiscate documents.
"After that the attackers carried all the documents to the yard and
burned them," members of Ata Zhurt told Itar-Tass. They said that the
people, who had broken into the office, had behaved in an aggressive way
and had hurled threats. Nevertheless, according to preliminary reports,
none of the people staying in the building were seriously injured.
Several hours prior to the attack, a rally of a public association
envolving relatives and friends of the people, who had died during the
tragic developments in Bishkek on April 7, was held outside the parliament
building. On April 7 the soldiers guarding the government building had
opened fire at participants in an opposition demonstration. 86 people had
died and several hundred more had been injured. Nevertheless, the
opposition had captured the main administrative building of the country,
and President Kurmanbek Bakiyev had been forced to flee from Kyrgyzstan.
Participants in the protest meeting demanded that Ata Zhurt Party should
be removed from the electoral race. One of its leaders said at a meeting
with electors that their party "failed to keep Bakiyev in office, but it
will bring him back to the country." In the afternoon the protest action
moved to the office of Ata Zhurt.
The interior ministry of Kyrgyzstan has not commented on the attack on
the Ata Zhurt office, but has confirmed the fact. Representatives of Ata
Zhurt Party also refuse to comment on it.
According to official reports, 29 political parties will vie for 120
seats in the Kyrgyz parliament at the elections, due to be held on October
10. Ata Zhurt, as well as another six to nine political associations, is
the favourite of the electoral race.
