Yemen to set up first volcano monitoring network

SANA'A, July 31 (Saba) - Yemen is planning to set up a volcano monitoring network that will be designed to monitor volcanicconditions in the country and neighboring states, the state-run 26sep.net has said.

Director general of the National Seismological Observatory Center (NSOC) Jamal Sha'alan said the center was about to complete necessary technical and financial proposals for the establishment of the network.

The project would be established in collaboration with the Germany-Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System, Sha'alan made clear.

Recent rock slides and volcanic eruptions that happened in some Yemeni areas such as the island of Jebel al-Tair in Hodeidah province established the necessity of the setting up of the network, Sha'alan said.

On September 31, 2007 a volcano erupted on the island of Jebel al-Tair in the Red Sea. 21 of 29 of the military personnel who were on the island when the volcano erupted were rescued.

Noteworthy, the NATO forces stationed near the island, rescued them.
