Chachoensao-Laem Chabang dual track rail network to operate mid-2011

BANGKOK, Oct 6 – Thailand's Ministry of Transport Ministry will inaugurate the dual track service rail network from Chachoensao to Laem Chabang in mid 2011 to increase freight transport by train to the Laem Chabang eastern deep seaport.

Sornsak Saensombat, deputy permanent-secretary for transport, on Wednesday presided over the opening of a seminar to hear opinions on the project, and to study the country’s traffic and transport development plan with its main objectives to make Thailand the hub of transportation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Mr Sornsak said the 78km Chachoensao-Laem Chabang dual track rail network is 60-70 per cent and is expected to be ready for service in mid 2011.

The Bt5.8 billion project will increase the volume of goods carried by train from ten per cent to 35 per cent, he added.

The project is aimed at linking economic areas and communities as well as building effective and cost-saving transportation system to raise the public's quality of life and to reduce economic losses from inefficient transport.

The traffic and transport development plan will spend more than Bt250 billion for the ten-year project from 2011-2020 to increase goods transportation by rail from 2.2 per cent to 4.5 per cent and by water transportation from 14 to 15 per cent, the transport official said.

The average of passenger train speed will increase from 47 to 90 km/hr and from 35 to 65 km/hr for a freight train he said.

The number of deaths caused by incidents during the transportation will drop by half from 11,000 to 5,500 persons per year. The number of passengers in Bangkok and surrounding areas which was around 2.3 million passengers and tended to drop, is also likely to increase. (MCOT online news)
