Iran calls for constructive role of UN in the world problems

New York, Oct 6, IRNA – Iran’s permanent representative in the United Nations called for constructive and decisive role of the UN in the world problems.

Mohammad Khazaei, in the meeting of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, which was focused on process of work in the UN and report of the secretary general, expounded on Iran’s viewpoints concerning the importance of the UN activities.

He said that decision making process in the UN needs serious changes and in fact, the General Assembly represents the world people and not a small group of several countries who make decisions.

Khazaei criticized the secretary general for not paying attention to the issue in his report and added that voting right and decision making process are rights of the General Assembly, but, unfortunately, the body has no constructive and decisive role in different world problems, like security, economic crises, disarmament, terrorism and observing nations rights.

Continuing his remarks, Khazaei noted other duties of the UN in the fields of protecting peace, millennium developing goals and necessity of coordination among different sections of the UN.

He said that multilateralism should be the core of the UN activities and the organization should be considered as a body which is owned by all members./end
