Nonthaburi death toll now 4; another body found in debris of bombed apartment

BANGKOK, Oct 6 - One more body has been found in the debris of bombed apartment in Tuesday's metropolitan Bangkok's Bang Bua Thong district in Nonthaburi province, bringing the total death toll to four, while the building subsided 5 cm as workers used structural steel to reinforce the building for fear that it could collapse in the aftermath of the powerful blast.

Three people were earlier listed as fatalities due to the blast -- two men and one woman while a fourth body was identified as a male victim. The authorities are in the process of identifying him.

A large bomb, possibly in the process of being assembled, exploded in a corner unit of the 5-story apartment building in Nonthaburi on Tuesday evening, destroying at least two housing units in the complex.

Police said the blast at 6.30pm was likely to have occurred in room number 202 on the second floor of the residential complex -- Samanmettha Mansion -- not only ripping out two residential units on adjacent floors and killing and injuring people inside the building and outside on the street, but also shattering windows and damaging nearby buildings and vehicles.

The officials said that the building had subsided for at least 5cm and that the structural steel was used to prop up the building while civil engineers are inspecting the structure to decide whether it was necessary to pull down the whole apartment.

Three tanks for air conditioning fluid, a fire extinguisher refilled with urea fertiliser, and a one gallon plastic container of fue of fuel and electrical tape were found at the back of the building.

Urea fertiliser is an ingredient for making bomb.

National police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree told reporters after chairing a meeting of high ranking police on the incident that the Bang Bua Thong apartment bombing is linked to four recent bombing attacks--one near Nang Lerng race track (Royal Turf Club) and others at Santirat Wittayalai school in Bangkok, and parking areas of The Mall Ngamwongwan and the Ministry of Public Health Ministry in Nonthaburi.

He said the renter of room number 202 was identified as Samai Wongsuwan from Chiang Mai, who is a suspect in a bombing in the northern province of Chiang Mai and is on the run.

Mr Samai had joined the rally organised by the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) earlier this year. He rented the room on Sept 23 and stayed with a married couple.

Before the incident, witnesses said they saw the trio carry two or three bags into their room.

The police said until now they could not confirm the identities of any of the four persons found dead at the scene.

More investigation was needed to identify the explosive, but they said it was as powerful as 10kg of TNT.

It was believed that the explosion occurred while the bomb was being assembled.

Closed circuit televisions (CCTV) at the scene showed a man walking out of room 202 before the explosion, and police are seeking him.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejajiva on an official trip to Brussels had been informed about the incident and had extended his condolences to the families of the victims. (MCOT
