Iran condemns state-terrorism in UN Legal Committee Meet in New York

New York, Oct 6, IRNA – Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations strongly condemned state terrorism on Tuesday in the annual meeting of the UN Legal Committee, which is currently discussing “ fight against terrorism” .

Speaking as representative of the Non-Aligned Movement member states, Mohammad Khazaei underlined principled stances of the NAM in firm condemnation of terrorism, including state terrorism, and stressed the necessity of making distinction between terrorist acts and legitimate fights of nations under foreign occupation to achieve right of determination of their own fate.

Iran’s ambassador, who was speaking as representative of 119 member countries of NAM, also condemned any kind of effort to relate terrorism with religions, nationality, civilizations or any special ethnic group adding that nobody should manipulate these concepts to justify terrorist acts or fight against terrorism.

He called terrorism a severe violation of international laws and human rights and said that terrorism should not be intermixed by legitimate campaign of the nations under colonial dominance or foreign occupation to determine their own fate.

The NAM representative also called for taking effective measures to fight against terrorism and asked governments to confront the phenomenon and restrain from providing any kind of help to the terrorist groups to organize, supply money or arsenals for terrorist activities.

The representative in the committee also stressed NAM stances on condemnation of resorting to force or threat to resort to force by a number of states against member states of NAM as a pretext to fight with terrorism and added that accomplishing political spiteful objectives through marking some countries as supporter of terrorism is rejected.

He also noted the importance of recognition and illumination of terrorism roots.

Iran, since last year, has been working as coordinator of NAM legal affairs and is responsible to follow up the UN Legal Committee agenda and other legal issues.

The Legal Committee annual meeting started its work on Monday and will last for seven more weeks.

Among issues in the committee agenda is compiling a comprehensive convention on fight against terrorism, which has been without any results in the past 10 years./end
