UN SECRETARY GENERAL CONVEYS MESSAGE OF PEACE AT INT'L ISLAMIC CONFAB

Jakarta, July 30 ANTARA) - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon sent a peace message to the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) participants in the first plenary session here Wednesday.

The UN Secretary General's speech which was read out by Dr. Hazidul Haque, the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) representative for Indonesia, was on the UN's efforts in assisting its members in preventing and resolving armed conflicts including those in El Salvador, Guatemala, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Sudan.

It was stated that the UN Secretary General has sought to use mediation including through silent diplomacy to promote dialogues and confidence building, facilitate meetings and agreements and provide technical advice and expertise.

A recent security report as mentioned in the speech said that the armed conflicts had dropped by 40% since 1992, thanks to the UN's prevention, peacekeeping and peace building efforts.

In conclusion it was stated that conflicts could be solved only through political solutions. If the UN was unable to encourage lasting political solutions, it would be left with humanitarian emergencies and peacekeeping without an end.

It was the UN's task to support these solutions with following the signing of an agreement and make sure that all the parties concerned contribute to maintaining the agreement.
