ASIA-EUROPE SUMMIT BEGINS
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit started Monday in Brussels, the Kingdom of Belgium. The leaders of the states who are attending the summit have been welcomed by His Highness Albert II of Belgium; Mr. Yves Leterme, the Prime Minister of Belgium; Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council; and Jose Manuel Barroso in the Royal Palace of Brussels.
“You are the representing Asia-Europe regions leaders who have taken a hard responsibility to give peaceful, sustainable and affluent life to people,” said Mr. Rompuy at the opening of the summit. “We are now going to discuss vital issues concerning the global governance of economics and finance, sustainable development, international and regional cooperation, and collaboration in frames of security and humanitarian assistance. Mutual confidence is the major basis of the cooperation,” Mr. Rompuy added.
The President of Mongolia plans to deliver a speech at a sub-meeting themed “Sustainable development” to be held on Wednesday.
The summit's main purpose is to confirm its responsibilities and promises on making a reform in the financial sector in the regions, strengthening the competitiveness among countries, combating against terrorism, ensuring human rights and security, preventing disasters and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
