Iran’s proposal on assisting Pakistani people ratified at IPU

Geneva, October 5, IRNA – Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal on assisting the flood-hit people of Pakistan was ratified here at Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Monday.

Head of the Iranian delegation, Hojjatoleslam Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabifard, in his address at the plenary opening session referred to the recent bitter developments including insulting the Glorious Qur’an in the United States and continuation of Zionist township building in occupied Palestine, which are in need of world nations’ attention, adding, “The disastrous floods in Pakistan call for the immediate and extraordinary attention of the IPU.”

Referring to the unprecedented volume of the inflicted damages and loss of life, and the insufficient contributions of the world nations so far, asked for the special attention of the IPU to the matter.

He proposed including an emergency article to the 2010 IPU agenda in that respect, considering approving of the proposal as expressing sympathy on the part of the world nations’ representatives with the Pakistani nation.

Iran’s proposal was then put to vote and ratified unanimously at the IPU.

The IPU began its annual meeting on Monday morning in the presence of the world parliament speakers and parliamentary delegations in Geneva would continue till Wednesday night.

The IPU is the international organization of Parliaments (Article 1 of the Statutes of the Inter-Parliamentary Union). It was established in 1889.

The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.

To that end, it fosters contacts, co-ordination, and the exchange of experience among parliaments and parliamentarians of all countries; considers questions of international interest and concern and expresses its views on such issues in order to bring about action by parliaments and parliamentarians; contributes to the defense and promotion of human rights -- an essential factor of parliamentary democracy and development; and contributes to better knowledge of the working of representative institutions and to the strengthening and development of their means of action.

The IPU supports the efforts of the United Nations, whose objectives it shares, and works in close co-operation with it. The Union also co-operates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals.

The IPU is financed primarily by its members out of public funds. The site of the Union's Headquarters is Geneva (Switzerland).
